Potential impacts of water scarcity

09 Feb 2022

According to research, by 2040 there will not be enough water to meet global demand for drinking water and energy production. Shrinking freshwater resources and growing demand will negatively affect billions of people. Here are five consequences of widespread water scarcity in the future.

Global water conflict intensifies

Freshwater resources are often shared by two or more countries, which can lead to more international conflicts as freshwater becomes more scarce. The United Nations has identified 276 transboundary river basins and 200 transboundary aquifers. While treaties have outpaced heated disputes over the past 50 years (150 Section 37), a 2012 report by the Director of National Intelligence suggested that excessive water use could threaten U.S. national security.

Food shortage

With the global population set to reach 2050, diminished water resources will make it difficult for food production to meet growing demand. Unless food production increases by 60% by 2050, the United Nations has warned. To meet current food needs, agriculture already accounts for around 70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals. Enhance agricultural water-saving irrigation techniques to slow unsustainable abstraction from groundwater sources.

Shortage of energy

The world's energy needs are rapidly increasing with modernization and population growth, but energy production is one of the world's largest consumers of freshwater resources. In the United States, thermal power plants accounted for 38% of freshwater withdrawals in 2010. Global electricity demand is expected to grow by 70% by 2035, with India and China accounting for half of the growth. Alternative energy production, such as wind and solar, requires far less water, but only a fraction of today's energy production.

No access to pure water

1.1 billion people currently lack access to clean fresh water. Without access to clean fresh water, these vulnerable populations face deadly water-borne diseases, while water harvesting can limit educational and economic opportunities. As the global population grows and water resources dwindle, more people will face the challenge of insufficient water access.

The economic situation is severe and the development is slowing down

The United Nations estimates that by 2030, half of the world's population will live in water-stressed areas. It is difficult to have a thriving economy when fresh water for industrial, agricultural and personal use is hard to come by. A lack of fresh water can limit the production of water-intensive goods such as cars, food and clothing. Lack of fresh water can also lead to disease, which affects worker productivity, while increased personal water costs can reduce household disposable income.

It can be seen that how to alleviate the problem of water shortage will become a major problem in the future. Accairwater produces water from the air and produces air water machine suitable for various industries, and is committed to solving the problem of water shortage.
