The value of water matters

The value of water matters

09 Dec 2022
Water is the source of life. In many countries, safe water sources are plentiful. Unfortunately, water scarcity and insecurity are a daily reality for more than 385 million children and their families in South Asia. As a result of persistent severe water scarcity, almost half of South Asia's children suffer detrimental and sometimes irreversible effects on their health, development, education and security.

The main causes of water scarcity in South Asia are poverty, power and inequality. The existence of natural water sources and a country's ability to utilize them are equally important in determining the availability of clean water. Millions of children and families in South Asia still do not have dedicated water lines connected to their homes or nearby community taps to collect their daily water. Installing and maintaining water infrastructure is a costly undertaking that many, including governments, cannot afford. Another option is bottled water and transported water, both of which are expensive and plastic pollution can negatively impact the environment.

Unsafe water is a major cause of diarrhea in children and water-borne diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. However, with no choice, families are forced to use contaminated water for cooking and drinking. As a result, children often face a myriad of health complications that limit their physical and mental development and exacerbate malnutrition and stunting. In extreme cases, these diseases can lead to lifelong morbidity and even death.

Lack of safe drinking water also affects children's education and thus their ability to escape the cycle of poverty. The need to travel long distances each day to fetch water constantly disrupts the learning of children in rural communities. In many cases, I have seen children drop out of school entirely. Safe water and sanitation in schools also affects children's academic performance, attendance and ability to complete school. This is especially true for adolescent girls who are forced to drop out of school during menstruating periods due to lack of proper toilets and clean water.

Sanitation facilities also require an uninterrupted supply of clean water to keep the site clean, sanitize equipment, wash hands and provide patients with safe drinking water. Without it, vital healthcare services such as childbirth could be disrupted, forcing many pregnant women to give birth at home in unsanitary conditions. In water-scarce healthcare facilities, the risk of patient infection also rises dramatically.

Historically, women and girls have paid a higher price for water scarcity. Generation after generation, they have had to travel long distances to fetch water to sustain themselves. Remote water sources, inclement weather, physical and mental exhaustion, and abuse for not retrieving water – all of these continue to expose women and girls to extreme danger, trauma and health problems.

When it comes to water, we must not forget the interconnectedness between water and livelihoods. In South Asia, most families in rural communities still earn their living from farming small plots of land. However, erratic weather patterns, droughts, floods, heat waves and other factors continue to adversely affect annual harvests and earnings. As a result, more and more people are forced to migrate to nearby cities or other countries in search of greener pastures. This is made worse for the women and children who are now tasked with managing all household chores.

In conclusion, safe water is life and we need to do our best to protect it. The situation is grim. However, there are certain steps countries can take to protect children and families from the adverse effects of water scarcity:

Provide safe and affordable water, close to every home and professionally managed.

Ensuring that all water services are resilient to climate change-related threats and making communities more resilient.

Avoid water scarcity crises through sustainable water management and early warning systems.

So how to solve the drinking water crisis? Today I will introduce to you an air to water generator, which can not only filter water and produce pure water suitable for drinking. Accairwater can not only produce atmospheric generators, but also water generator from air. If you want to get pure water, you can come here to choose the machine that suits you.
